We are pretty much dorks here in my office. Well, at least my boss and I are. Some of the others are too, but in different ways.
Tim and I have had countless conversations discussing parts of speech, tenses of verbs, and language in general. One topic Tim really likes is words he hates. His most hated word is MOIST. For some reason, this just turns his stomach. But he loves the word COTERMINUS and uses it whenever possible- which turns out to be more often than you would think. That and PARAMECIUM.
After careful consideration, I have two words that I hate and have always hated although I never really consciously knew that I felt that way. My words are SHE and ACT. I cannot count the times that the word SHE has made me sad, or mad, or uncomfortable, or nervous. There is nothing like hearing just that word from another conversation and seeing those involved in that conversation giving you a quick glance. You know that you are SHE and they are talking about what SHE did, or what SHE is wearing, or how SHE screwed up yet again and how did SHE get that job anyway? So SHE is my least favorite word.
The next word is ACT. As in, Why are you ACTING like that? Stop ACTING up. ACT right. Stop ACTING like such a bitch. The word just makes everything seem fake and petty. Like whatever feelings you are expressing are not truly yours.
But I love the word CHICKEN. I think it is funny in almost any context. For example - here it is in a sentence from this post: You know that you are the CHICKEN and they are talking about what that CHICKEN did, or what the CHICKEN is wearing, or how that CHICKEN screwed up yet again and how did that CHICKEN get that job anyway? It makes me giggle.
